From Humble Beginnings....
The West Side East Side Basketball Association began as a two-day basketball tournament in Swinford Hall of Johnson Complex in Spring 2007. Maurice Harding, then a Resident Assistant, created the tournament as a residence hall community-bridging program. Due to its success as a tournament, Harding decided to expand the tournament and make it a league for all halls of Johnson Complex in the Fall & Spring 2007- 2008. There were a total of six teams from Botsford, Swinford, Schmidt, and Wilson Halls. With the help of other Resident Assistants, Hall Directors, and Ball State Office of Recreation Services, the league became very popular and successful.
In Fall 2008, anticipating it only to become more popular, Harding expanded the league even further to include all residence halls on the West Side of campus (Johnson, LaFollette, and Elliott Halls) with 18 teams and over 150 players and coaches for teams. The name of the league became the West Side Basketball Association or WBA. Harding formed a student staff to assist with the operation of the league. With the popularity of the league steadily growing, the season games were moved from Irving Gym to Ball Gymnasium where teams could invite fans to come and watch, creating a quality basketball game day experience for the players, coaches, and fans alike.
The league expansion could not stop there. In Fall 2009, the WBA staff took it further to include all residence halls on campus. The league was renamed the West Side East Side Basketball Association or WEBA and included teams from just about every hall on campus. Not satisfied with WEBA just being a successful intramural league, the Leadership Staff decided it was only right to move from Intramural status to Club Sport status. The Leadership Staff met on several occasions to create an official constitution that would govern the organization. Through test and trials and over 3 rough drafts, the constitution was approved by the Office of Student Life in Spring 2010 and WEBA was granted official Club status as part of Ball State office of Recreation Services. WEBA became a Ball State recognized organization.
Today, WEBA is not just your typical basketball league. It is Ball State’s premier and only Residence Hall basketball organization. From coaches to basketball game play commentators, players and fans alike get the real experience of a collegiate game. This 6 month basketball league begins with opening weekend at the beginning of October and runs until the Championship in Worthen Arena in mid-March. The league holds an annual All-Star Saturday, mid-season in December, with a 3-point contest, Slam Dunk Contest, and All-Star Game, starring representatives from both the West and East Sides. The league holds a sports banquet at the end of the season. The leadership staff meets regularly to discuss ways to make the league even bigger, better, and floating amongst the top organizations Ball State has to offer.
